3 Ton Mini Excavator: When You Need To Step Up A Weight Class

3 Ton Mini Excavator: When You Need To Step Up A Weight Class

Need more capability without moving to a full-size machine? A 3 ton mini excavator can be the practical step up when a smaller digger feels stretched on regular groundworks, drainage or bigger landscaping jobs.

The key is choosing for the work you actually do: digging requirements, attachments, access and transport all matter. Here’s how the 3.2-ton RIPPA R32 PRO compares with the smaller R22 PRO and larger R57 PRO, and what to check before you buy.

WHO NEEDS A 3-TONNE-CLASS EXCAVATOR?

A machine around this weight class can suit contractors whose jobs are starting to demand more than a compact 1- or 2-tonne digger can comfortably deliver.

Consider stepping up if you regularly work on:

  • Groundworks and foundations where deeper or more sustained excavation is required.
  • Drainage and utility trenching across larger sites.
  • Civil engineering jobs involving heavier attachments and repeat digging.
  • Larger landscaping contracts where productivity matters as much as access.
  • Plant hire work serving customers who need a versatile, capable mini excavator.

If your work is mostly shallow digging in tight gardens, the smaller machine may still be the smarter fit. Our guide to the best 1-ton mini excavator helps explain when compact access takes priority. For regular groundworks, compare that with our guide to the 2-ton mini excavator sweet spot.

WHAT CHANGES WHEN YOU STEP UP?

A heavier excavator can bring more stability and capability, but the tonnage figure alone does not tell you exactly what a machine can do. Compare the actual working specifications, attachment setup and manufacturer’s lift chart for the model you’re considering.

Lifting: check the chart, not just the weight

Lift capacity changes depending on how far the load is from the machine, its height, whether you’re lifting over the front or side, and the machine’s setup. The weight of the bucket, hitch and lifting accessories matters too.

If you plan to lift materials, check the model’s load chart and use its approved lifting point and suitable lifting accessories. A larger class may give you more useful capacity, but don’t assume it makes every lift safe. Wacker Neuson explains why excavator lift capacity varies with radius and working position.

Reach, depth and stability

The right machine should suit the depth and reach your typical job requires, as well as the ground you work on. More machine weight can help it feel more planted, particularly when digging or using a heavier attachment, but soft or uneven ground still needs care. Keep within the operating guidance and the machine’s limits.

Transport: plan it before you buy

A bigger machine can be a more demanding load to move. Check the transport weight for the exact configuration you’ll buy, including bucket and quick hitch, and factor in your trailer, towing vehicle and other kit. Don’t assume a machine can be moved legally simply because it is described as a mini excavator. Check the relevant GOV.UK car and trailer guidance and your vehicle and trailer limits.

MEET THE RIPPA R32 PRO

The RIPPA R32 PRO is a 3.2-tonne excavator designed for contractors looking for a capable step up while keeping a compact machine on site.

RIPPA R32 PRO at a glance

  • Operating class: 3.2 tonnes
  • Engine: Genuine Kubota engine
  • Chassis: Fixed chassis
  • Working features: Swing boom, hydraulic thumb and quick hitch
  • Published digging force: 27 kN
  • Good fit for: Groundworks, drainage, trenching and larger landscaping jobs

A fixed chassis gives you a straightforward setup, while the swing boom helps you work at an angle without repositioning the whole machine for every task. The hydraulic thumb and quick hitch make it easier to handle compatible attachments and materials. Check the exact attachment fit and machine specification when ordering.

R22 PRO VS R32 PRO VS R57 PRO

Not sure whether to stay smaller, step up or go larger? Start with the work, then compare the machines.

RIPPA R22 PRO excavator with extendable tracks

Model Weight class Standout features Consider it when…
RIPPA R22 PRO 2.2 tonnes Kubota engine, extendable tracks, swing boom, hydraulic attachments and upgraded cab Access and a smaller footprint are important, but you want capable everyday digging
RIPPA R32 PRO 3.2 tonnes Genuine Kubota engine, fixed chassis, swing boom, hydraulic thumb and quick hitch Your regular workload needs a step up in machine class and a practical attachment setup
RIPPA R57 PRO 5.7 tonnes Genuine Yanmar 4TNV98L engine, steel tracks, swing boom, hydraulic grab/thumb, quick hitch and full glass cab You regularly take on heavier-duty work and have the site access and transport plan for a larger machine

The R22 PRO’s extendable tracks can narrow the machine for access and widen them for a broader working stance. Its published track-width range is 989–1,309 mm; confirm the exact working dimensions and setup with us before purchase. The R32 PRO has a fixed chassis, so its base width does not adjust in the same way. That may suit operators who prefer a simpler fixed setup, while extendable tracks can be useful when access width varies.

The R57 PRO is a different step again. Choose it when your regular workload calls for a heavier-duty machine, not just because bigger sounds better. Confirm access, transport and the working specifications before deciding.

FIXED CHASSIS OR EXTENDABLE TRACKS?

Neither option is automatically right for every job.

Choose a fixed chassis if you know the machine’s working width suits your sites and want a straightforward base configuration. The R32 PRO gives you this setup in the 3.2-tonne class.

Choose extendable tracks if you move between narrow access points and jobs where a wider stance is useful. The R22 PRO offers this flexibility, but make sure you have the room to extend the tracks where you plan to work.

Before you choose, measure gates, paths, working areas and transport arrangements. If your work also needs specialist attachments, compare the options carefully: from augers and choosing the right size to buckets, breakers and grabs.

YOUR PRE-PURCHASE CHECKLIST

Before choosing your 3 ton mini excavator, confirm:

  1. Job requirements: Typical digging depth, reach, ground conditions and heaviest regular tasks.
  2. Lift data: The manufacturer’s lift chart for the actual machine configuration.
  3. Access: Gate widths, track setup, turning room and working space.
  4. Transport: Machine transport weight, trailer capacity and towing-vehicle limits.
  5. Attachments: Quick-hitch compatibility, hydraulic requirements and the attachments you’ll use most.
  6. Support: Delivery, parts availability, warranty and after-sales help.
