Auger For Excavator: How To Pick The Right Size For Your Mini Digger

Auger For Excavator: How To Pick The Right Size For Your Mini Digger

A hydraulic auger can make fence installation, planting and groundworks quicker and more consistent. But choosing one is not just a case of matching an attachment to your digger’s weight. You also need to think about the hole you need, your ground conditions and whether the excavator’s hydraulics are suitable.

Here’s a straightforward guide to choosing an auger for excavator work, and what to check before ordering.

Start With The Job

First, decide what you need to drill. The right auger is the one that makes the required hole safely and efficiently, not necessarily the largest option your machine can carry.

Think about:

  • Hole diameter: What size hole does the post, plant or installation require?
  • Hole depth: How deep do you need to drill?
  • Ground conditions: Is the soil loose, firm, clay-heavy, stony or compacted?
  • How often you’ll use it: Is this a one-off job or a regular part of your work?

For fence posts, check the post manufacturer’s guidance and allow for the specified backfill or concrete. For trees and shrubs, size the hole to suit the root ball and planting requirements, not just the stem.

Understand The Listed Auger Sizes

Rippa’s range includes 80cm, 100cm and 150cm augers, each paired with hydraulic drives for the ECO and PRO excavator range.

The size shown in a product name does not always tell you the exact hole diameter an attachment will drill. Check the product specification and confirm what the listed measurement refers to before choosing. If you’re comparing options, start with the hole your job actually requires, then ask us to confirm which auger and drive combination is suitable.

Explore the available options: 80cm auger, 100cm auger and 150cm auger.

Match The Auger Drive To The Excavator

An auger relies on the excavator’s auxiliary hydraulics to power its drive. Before buying, check the machine and attachment specifications together. The important details include:

  • Auxiliary hydraulic flow
  • Hydraulic pressure
  • Drive and fitting compatibility
  • Attachment weight and machine stability
  • Any connection or operating requirements specified by the supplier

Excavator weight alone does not confirm that a drive is compatible. Two machines in the same weight class may have different hydraulic specifications. Flow affects how the drive operates; pressure and the drive design affect the torque available for drilling. The attachment must suit the machine’s published hydraulic limits.

Don’t guess, and don’t assume that an attachment will fit simply because it is described as suitable for a mini digger. Check the machine’s specification or ask our team to help confirm the pairing.

Choose For The Ground You’ll Be Drilling

Ground conditions can make a noticeable difference to drilling. Loose, workable soil is generally easier to drill than hard clay, compacted ground or stony soil. A large bit can put more demand on the drive and machine, particularly in difficult conditions.

For better results:

  • Use a bit size suited to the hole and the ground.
  • Avoid forcing the auger if it repeatedly stalls.
  • Check that the drive and bit are approved for the material.
  • Ask for advice if you expect to encounter rock, large stones or very hard ground.

An attachment that works well in ordinary soil may not be the right choice for tougher conditions. Match the auger to the job, and make sure your excavator can operate it within the attachment’s limits.

Pick A Mini Digger That Fits The Work

Your excavator needs to handle the attachment while remaining stable and controllable. Rippa’s range includes compact models for restricted access and larger machines for more demanding groundworks.

For example, the RIPPA R10 ECO is a 1-ton excavator with a genuine Kubota Z482 engine and extendable tracks. The RIPPA R15 ECO is a 1.5-ton model powered by a Kubota D722 engine. For a larger option, the RIPPA R18 PRO is a 1.8-ton excavator with a genuine Kubota engine, while the RIPPA R22 PRO offers a 2.2-ton platform.

These examples help you compare the range, but they are not a substitute for checking each machine’s hydraulic details against the auger drive. Tell us which excavator you have, or which one you’re considering, and what you need to drill. We can help you check the right combination.

Quick Checks Before You Buy

Use this checklist to make your choice easier:

  1. Define the hole: Confirm the required diameter and depth for the post, plant or installation.
  2. Check the ground: Note whether it is loose soil, clay, compacted, stony or another material.
  3. Confirm your machine: Find its auxiliary flow and pressure specifications.
  4. Check the attachment: Make sure the drive, hydraulic connections and machine limits match.
  5. Confirm the measurement: Ask what the listed auger size refers to and what hole it is designed to make.
  6. Get advice if unsure: A quick compatibility check can help you avoid choosing the wrong setup.
